- What is the D-Team?
The main purpose of the D team is to develop talent for future years. About 15 freshmen and sophomores will be selected based on a combination of tryout scores and coaches’ recommendations. - Who can be on the D-Team?
- You must be a freshman or sophomore.
- You must attend tryouts (Thursday, January 31, 2008, 4 to 10 pm, at Evanston Township High School).
- You may not have competed with Chicago’s ARML teams before.
- You must have a recommendation form from your coach. Click here for a .pdf version.
- What do D-Teamers do?
The D-team practices on the same schedule with the other teams, goes to the competition, and does the same competition problems as the other teams. D team is different in that we study a fixed curriculum of number theory, geometry, theory of equations, and other topics that appear frequently at ARML and in other advanced topics.
Students come to four practices over the Spring, and we take a two-day trip to the competition in Iowa (leaving on Thursday, returning on Saturday evening). In practices, you get to work with fifteen other students who are as excited about math as you are, learning new and unusual mathematics and solving problems outside the scope of most math classes and math contests. The trip is an opportunity to have fun and take a short break from school, and while we do practice and compete, you’ll also have time to relax and bond with your teammates; contestants regularly report that ARML is the highlight of their school year. - What’s life like after D-Team?
D-team students have returned to do very well in subsequent years; in fact, 2002’s A/B teams contained four students from the 2001 D team, and many more from previous years. - Who can I contact for more information about the D-Team?
